The Festival is now open for entries with the competition closing on Wednesday 31st October 2018.
Filmmakers must be students and must be between 4 and 25 years of age.
* Teacher, parent and other filmmaker assistance is permitted but must be limited to non-creative roles (e.g. planning assistance, technical advice, funding, etc).
Students must enter their film in one of two entry groups depending on where they live. Tasmanian entrants or Regional entrants (for entries from Australian states excluding Tasmania).
There are four (4) entry categories for each group; films must be entered into the category that reflects the age/year group/tertiary level of the film makers.
- Junior (Kindergarten to Year 4)
- Intermediate (Year 5 – Year 8)
- High School (Year 9 and Year 10) and
- Post Year 10 – University (Year 11 & 12, TAFE, University)
Your short film must be:
- no more than four minutes long (if you’re a Junior, Intermediate or High School entrant)
- no more than eight minutes long (for post-Year 10/TAFE/University entrants).
All entries must be original work that hasn’t previously been screened or posted online.
Free to Enter
Entry to the Festival is free and students from kindergarten to university are eligible to submit their films and have the chance to share in thousands of prizes.
You can enter an original short film in whatever genre you like—drama, comedy, action, documentary, or even an animation. Music videos and TV commercials can also be entered. The story, setting, plot and style are all completely up to you.
Junior, Intermediate and High School entries must include the Festival’s nominated feature item. This year’s feature item is HAT.
This item can be central to your story, or it can just make a brief appearance, but make sure you include it somewhere!
Awards and Prizes
Films will be reviewed by our panel of expert judges who will decide the winners of each category. The winners will share in thousands of dollars worth of prizes.

The Festival’s Awards Event will be held in Tasmania at the Don Bosco Creative Arts Centre (Guildford Young College) in Glenorchy (near Hobart). Students, teachers, parents, and the general public are invited to walk the red carpet and enjoy an afternoon of fantastic original films, as we celebrate the hard work and achievements of all our entrants.
This event provides an incredible opportunity for student filmmakers to see the finalist films on the big screen, be part of an audience of their fellow filmmakers, teachers, parents and film industry experts, and feel justifiably proud of their great efforts! The winners for the 2018 Festival will be announced at this special event.
